This makes me realize I need to put together a "Ride-or-Die" travel toolkit stat! (I always, always, always have a pen on me and usually a notebook too...but that's pretty much it).

Also I have a question! Why do you have dip pens rather than fountain pens in your kit? I’m really curious!

I’m going to do a few different posts on fountain pens. I was just talking (geeking out) with Claire Powell about the long hunt for a flex nib fountain pen. She may have found it!

(She’s worth a follow too. Her work is excellent. https://www.instagram.com/misspowellposts?igsh=MWg4b25sdnZjdDFybg== )

Ooh, very curious what she found--I gave up after searching for a flex nib fountain pen for a while. But! I use a fude nib fountain pen and that gets at the variable line width in a different way.

The magical nipple looks really useful. Do your ink pot travels well in airplanes? My ink stuff always spills

Surprisingly yes. I’ve had fountain pens explode on my in planes but not the inkwell. It’s dicing with death to try using it on a flight though..

My new favorite pen is a Hocoro dip pen. I want a tiny travel vial. It deserves to go on the road.

Love love seeing this - so helpful. An artistic Jack Reacher; I like that 😁

You say you use the blue lead in the Bic pencil ... but the Bic is listed as 0.5mm and the lead as 0.7mm. How does that work? (BTW, thanks for this great peek behind the paywall!)

So many questions... Paper is the real weight and bulk when travelling. Or do you just use napkins? Blue pencil. I grew up when print artwork was positioned with wax. (Not that long ago actually, like more recent than the Dark Ages). Artboards were printed with blue grids and we used blue pencils to mark things up because the cameras used to shoot the art would not see blue. (Also saw red as black). But today? Why blue? Pretty sure my scanner sees blue, tho honestly I have not tried.

If you like dip pens check out this one: the Hocoro. The nib travels protected in the barrel. Also, this nib has a reservoir so you can write more with each dip.l

My new travel and plein air kit is an Art Toolkit. I got the large one and can fit an Art Toolkit folio palette, brushes, pens, and colored pencils.

I need the zipper bag. I keep everything in a pocket of my backpack. The one additional staple for me is my straight edge. I use a protractor.

I love seeing what others have in their travel kit! Great post. When I travel, I admittedly take way too much - gouache palette, watercolor pencils, brush pen, etc. But for everyday and always, I have a flair pen, whichever mechanical pencil is my favorite at the moment, and two pentel 8 colored mechanical pencils (that way, I have 16 colors). I carry them in the pocket of my sketchbook cover.
